Home sales in Atlanta decline more than 6 percent

In February, the state of Georgia and the city of Atlanta had one of the largest decreases in home sales in the country.

It was recently reported by CoreLogic, Inc., that home sales in the state of Georgia were down 6.6 percent and in Atlanta they fell 6.5 percent. Homes prices across the nation are down 2 percent from this time last year.

The top five states in the nation with depreciating home sales were Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Illinois and Georgia in that order. The states that had home sales with the highest appreciation were as follows, West Virginia, Michigan, Florida, Arizona, and South Dakota. In some areas of the country, homeowners look to make upgrades on their home instead of putting in on the market.

Nuclear plant expansion approved in Atlanta

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has recently approved a plan to build nuclear reactors at the Plant Vogtle site in Georgia. This will be the first time in over 33 years that nuclear reactors will be built in the state.

In a 4-1 vote, commissioners approved the request by Southern Co. to build to 1,100 mega-watt reactors. By 2016 or 2017, the reactors are expected to begin making electricity. Customers in the area that are supplied by Georgia Power have stated that they have already noticed an increase in their bill.

The project is estimated to cost $14 billion and Georgia Power is supposed to be responsible for over $6 billion. Southern Co. also operates two other plants in Georgia, Plant Hatch and Plant Farley. The project has received a federal loan guarantees of over $8.3 billion.

Terminal at Atlanta airport may still open on schedule

The new terminal at the Atlanta Airport may still open on time even though legal issues have caused some delays.

Officials involved with the terminal’s construction have stated that the terminal is still scheduled to open in the middle of May. The terminal has faced delays because of contract battles with restaurants and retail owners.

A judge in Fulton County stated that the companies that did not win contracts for the area can have 20 days to file protests, but officials have stated that it will not slow down the opening because lawyers will still be negotiating contracts with the winners.

The city of Atlanta runs the airport and are currently trying to line the new terminal with shops and restaurants. The judge also ordered that the city release other documents to the companies that do not win the contracts.

Car accident near Fernbank Museum injures one

A car accident in Atlanta left one person in critical condition after suffering head trauma and other internal injuries.

According to a spokesperson with the Atlanta police, the accident occurred when a man lost control of her Nissan Altima and crossed the center line of the roadway causing his vehicle to collide with a van taxi.

The woman was trapped in the car as a result of the crash and it took emergency crews an hour to extract her from the car. She was then transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in order to be treated. The taxi driver suffered a broken leg as a result of the accident.

Ian Somerhalder holds charity event in Atlanta

Actor, Ian Somerhalder, held a fundraiser event in Atlanta on Oct. 29 in order to benefit his charity, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.

The event was a Halloween costume party and held at the Opera Nightclub on Peachtree St. The event was titled Empoweresque and Somerhalder dressed as Captain Planet as a way to show his support of all environmental protection projects. The event gave people, ages 5 and up, the opportunity to talk to the actor. There was also live entertainment, an open bar and prize giveaways.

The foundation was established on Somerhalder’s 32nd birthday, December 8, 2010 and it is a non-profit organization that works to educate people on energy conservation, environmental protection, and the elimination of animal cruelty. Somerhalder is a star in the CW’s television show, the “Vampire Diaries.”

Atlanta offers multiple events for Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend will offer multiple sporting events beginning on Thursday with a football game at the Georgia Dome that is expected to bring in more than 100,000 people.

Because of the additional people in the area,  all road construction projects will be put on hold in order to alleviate traffic issues. Beyond the Georgia Tech game, the Clark Atlanta University football team will also be playing over the weekend.

Also occurring this weekend is the Dragon Con science fiction convention that will take place in multiple different hotels downtown. Another large event that will take place is Atlanta Black Gay Pride and this will be happening at the Melia hotel all weekend.

Bat found on flight from Wisconsin to Atlanta

A bat that was found on a flight from Wisconsin to Atlanta has officials concerned about the safety of the passengers on the plane. A national search is out for those on the flight in order to make sure that they are protected from possible rabies.

The Center of Disease Control stated that it is unknown if the bat on the plane had rabies, but they want to make sure that passengers did not come in close contact with the bat just in case.

The flight, Delta Flight 5121, took place on Aug. 5 and departed from Madison, Wis. en route for Atlanta, Georgia. While in flight, the bat began to fly back and forth through the cabin and forced the plane to return to Madison.

Passengers then trapped the bat into the jet bathroom, but it later escaped. As a precaution, health officials want to check with all passengers who may have had possible exposure.

Taylor Swift welcomed Congressmen to fundraise at concert

Pop star, Taylor Swift, allowed seven Congressmen to fundraise at her concert in D.C. this week.

The shows were on August 2 and 3 and were both sold. A republican Congressman in Georgia will be attending one of the shows in D.C.. Swift is not the first pop star to have political fundraisers at her show.

Last year, Lady Gaga allowed a New Jersey Democrat to fundraise at her Monster Ball tour. Other Congress members that will be fundraising at Swift’s show were from Texas, New York, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, South Dakota.

Officials investigate suspicious house fire

The fire department in Evansville is currently investigating a suspicious house fire that occurred Wednesday night.

Crews responded to the fire at 7:45 p.m. when someone called to report an explosion. Officials said that the fire started on a mattress that was leaning against the wall in the living room.

The owners came to the home when fire crews were working to the put out the fire. They told officials that there were people out to get them. Officials have also said that the backdoor was forced open, but there were not presence of flammable liquids.

Delta Air Lines to sell two Atlanta facilities

Delta Air Lines has announced that they will be selling two facilities in Atlanta. This decision comes for two reasons: to cut costs for the company and to keep the operations centered in one area.

They will selling Atlanta Reliability Center sometime this summer. They will be also be selling the building that was used as the Delta Technology Building because the program folded two years ago. The Atlanta-based Delta, will also be selling the former headquarters of a subsidiary, Comair.

This includes a building in Cincinnati and one in Minneapolis-St. Paul. After Delta acquired Northwest Airlines, which was based out of Minnesota, they have multiple operations set up there. In order to consolidate, they also will be moving their flight attendant training center and pilot training center from Minnesota to Atlanta.
