Mardi Gras events in Atlanta area

Fat Tuesday is this week in the cities around the country will be celebrating this with food and events. Atlanta restaurants are offering specials throughout the weekend and serving Cajun food in order to celebrate Mardi Gras.

First, Atkins Park will be kicking off the celebration on Feb. 17 and going through Feb. 21. There will be oyster specials and the musical act, the Patrick Scott Band, will be performing. The celebration will end on Tuesday night with a Mardi Gras celebration including beads.

Also, Parish Food & Goods will be hosting their 4th Annual Mardi Gras Music and Food Fest this weekend and the event will feature Cajun food and live musical performances. The tickets to the event will be $40 and that will include a King cake, unlimited crawfish and other Cajun specialties.

The Park Tavern will also have a Mardi Gras Music and Food Fest will take place on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. and a costume and crawfish and eating contest.

Best places to see holiday lights in Atlanta

It is now the holiday season and a great way to celebrate this time of year is to view holiday lights. Here are a few places that will have a spectacle of lights for you and your family to enjoy.

First, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens will be putting on their annual Christmas Extravaganza. This festive event includes Santa Claus himself, a Muppet show, a model train and nearly one million lights. Holiday displays are set up throughout the entire garden and they can be viewed by peering through a car window.

Another great way to celebrate the season is to visit Centennial Winter Park as the Holiday in Lights event takes place from November to January. The event features thousands of lights and displays as well as an outdoor ice skating rink.

Ian Somerhalder holds charity event in Atlanta

Actor, Ian Somerhalder, held a fundraiser event in Atlanta on Oct. 29 in order to benefit his charity, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.

The event was a Halloween costume party and held at the Opera Nightclub on Peachtree St. The event was titled Empoweresque and Somerhalder dressed as Captain Planet as a way to show his support of all environmental protection projects. The event gave people, ages 5 and up, the opportunity to talk to the actor. There was also live entertainment, an open bar and prize giveaways.

The foundation was established on Somerhalder’s 32nd birthday, December 8, 2010 and it is a non-profit organization that works to educate people on energy conservation, environmental protection, and the elimination of animal cruelty. Somerhalder is a star in the CW’s television show, the “Vampire Diaries.”

Heavy traffic expected in Atlanta due to multiple events

The city of Atlanta is hosting numerous events this weekend and police have warned of the additional traffic in the area.

According to the Ledger, a few of the larger events include the Atlanta Pride Festival which is now celebrating their 41st year with a weekend full of events.  The Atlanta Pride Parade will take place on Sunday in Piedmont Park and police have said that some parking will be on restriction during certain times in honor of the special event.

Other events include college football games such as the Georgia Tech vs. Maryland game that will occur Saturday afternoon. Also, the Atlanta Falcons will be playing the Green Bay Packers at the Georgia Dome on Sunday night.

Atlanta offers multiple events for Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend will offer multiple sporting events beginning on Thursday with a football game at the Georgia Dome that is expected to bring in more than 100,000 people.

Because of the additional people in the area,  all road construction projects will be put on hold in order to alleviate traffic issues. Beyond the Georgia Tech game, the Clark Atlanta University football team will also be playing over the weekend.

Also occurring this weekend is the Dragon Con science fiction convention that will take place in multiple different hotels downtown. Another large event that will take place is Atlanta Black Gay Pride and this will be happening at the Melia hotel all weekend.

Deion Sanders hosts two events in Atlanta this weekend

Deion Sanders will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame soon, but before he does this he will be hosting two special events in Atlanta.

This Saturday he will be hosting The PrimeTime Black & Red Gala and ongoing throughout the whole weekend will be the Deion Sanders and Jamal Lewis Youth Football Tournament.

The gala will offer food, drinks and music with confirmed guests including Jamie Foxx, Usher, Tyler Perry, Toni Braxton, and Jermaine Dupri. All proceeds from the event go to the charity set up by Deion and Pilar Sanders that promotes positive youth self image through education.

The football tournament is an annual event that is hosted by former NFL players and features youth football organizations. The games will run through July 15-17 with the Championship Game taking place on the 17th.

Miss America visits Atlanta

Miss America visited the Metro-Atlanta area on Thursday in order to celebrate the local Rite Aid.

Teresa Scanlan left her visit to the Publix in Alpharetta and went straight to the Rite Aid  between 10 a.m. and noon yesterday. She joined in order to celebrate the money that Rite Aid customers raised for the Children’s Miracle Network. They raised nearly $50 million.

The event was free and open to the public. Prizes were raffled and given away and Scanlan signed autographs and posed for pictures. The Children’s Miracle Network raises awareness and money for 170 children’s hospitals across the continent.

O Magazine announces event in Atlanta

O You! is O Magazine’s major event that includes workshops and seminars brought by the largest magazine contributors.

It is estimated that nearly 5,000 women will be attending the event and it will occur on October 15 in Atlanta, Georgia. Contributors to the event will include Dr. Oz, Suze Orman, Bob Green, Peter Walsh, Adam Glassman and Nate Berkus.

This is the first year that O You! will have a digital component on Oprah. com. Another new edition that is in the works is to bring in real women to make a panel in order to focus on the part of the magazine that centers around real women.

First Lady visits Atlanta to speak about childhood obesity

The First Lady Michelle Obama will be visiting Atlanta in order to celebrate the first anniversary of her campaign to stop childhood obesity.

The First lady was greeted by the pastor of the Ray of Hope church, the president of Morehouse College and the former surgeon general at the Burgess-Peterson Academy in Atlanta.

She then visited with children in their classrooms and ate healthy snacks with them. She then headed to the Alpharetta for a speech later that afternoon.

Georgia Cup adds new bicycle rides this year

This is the 10th year for the Georgia Cup to take place and the series continues to grow each year with the addition of new races and rides.

The Georgia Cup is put on by Spincycle Sports Marketing. In addition to the eight race weekends that already exist there will now be a a six-stage Tour of Atlanta. There will also be a winter training time trial system and weekday races in the spring and summer.
